Mr. Williams - I am opening a small dayspa in a few months. Which is better - leasing equipment or paying for it with cash from a business loan? What's the pros and cons of leasing? What do most day spa's do - lease or purchase? Thank you.

Hi there Cheryl. I've been offered a position with a medical spa that offers laser hair removal, foto facials, microdermabrasion, botox, collagen, stretch mark removal, etc. I am new to this industry, I was previously a booking agent for makeup artists, hair stylists & wardrobe stylists. Anyway, I was curious as to what a typical salary is for this position. They offer a base salary, plus commission, and I've been told that this position does very well financially. One thing that concerns me is that the spa is located in a mall in Beverly Hills. There are a million spas like this in Beverly Hills, that are NOT located in a mall. It's grand opening is when I begin working, so there is no previous history in this area to compare to. They do have several spas in Washington, Oregon, Nevada & Northern California - all are very successful.
I just wanted to get your opinion. I know this industry makes billions of dollars each year, I was just curious what you thought of these circumstances.
Thanks so much!! Have a great day!
Tami

Hello. I am very interested in pursuing a career in the skin care industry. The problem is I'm really not sure where to begin. I've been researching cosmetology schools on the internet, but there's just so many it's overwhealming. I'd like to go into the esthetics field (maybe medical esthetics)and someday own my own spa. But where should I start? I want to attend the best school and get complete training in all different areas of skincare so i can be prepared for the industry. I live in California. Do you have any advice for me and can you please recommend some reputable schools? Thank you so much for your help! =)

Hello cheryl,
What is the best way to approach a doctor for medical treatments in a spa? Do I call around in the area? Place an ad in the paper? and after I have contaced them what advantage is it to them to perform these services in my spa verses their practice? Any advice greatly appreciated as this is the last reasearch I need for my business plan.
Thank -you
C. Reiselman

Was wondering if you can tell me indusrty average hourly wages for the following positions:
It doesn't have to be exact, but a ballpark #. Assume the employees are experienced in the industry.

I am making plans to open a medical day spa. My brother is a dermatologist and is willing to invest some time and capital into the business, but he has his own full time practice and would not be able to be present every day. How would I find the legal boundaries of offering medical treatments (botox, laser, chemical peels, etc) via estheticians and nurses in the spa? And am I required to have a physician physically on the premises every day? Are there different regulatory issues for each state? I live in Missouri.
Thanks,
Jackie

One more question regarding the medical spa with regard to having a physician involved in the business. I understand that most medical spas are owned by the physicians themselves. In my case, I would be employing the physician/nurses/estheticians to administer the treatments in my non-physician business. What type of payment method is generally used in this type of scenario? Is it flat fee? Or commission based? Or percentage of profits on the treatments? And what kind of costs should I prepare myself for with this?
Thanks again,
Jackie

Hi--
I am thinking of becoming a massage therapist and have not been able to obtain a straight answer regarding salary. My current massage therapist practices in the Boston area and charges $70 for one hour of massage. I assume, however, that she does not take home the entire $70/hr. Please advise me as to what other costs are taken out of salary and how much my massage therapist (and I, if I do end up entering the massage business) would make. Thanks.

Skip,
I am a student that is doing a business plan on opening a cosmetology school. I am having difficulty finding information on the types of questions I need to be asking and answering to be successful. Could you point me in the right direction. (I have already spoke with the American Association of Cosmetology Schools, not a lot of help).
Thanks,
Mark

Sam, I don't know if this is the right forum to ask this question, so if it's not, forgive me. I am a physician in the beginning stages of setting up a non-surgical skin care practice (aka medical spa). We plan for a retail/reception area, private waiting room, 4 treatment rooms, consultation room, break area, men and womens changing room, office, and physicians office and staff bathroom. We'd also like to offer a post procedure/relaxation room for our clients to use if desired. What type of square footage should we be looking at? You can drop me an email at don@sdsudy.com
