| Hello - I'm very interested in going to massage school. I'm in my mid-30's and I have an old (from 1987) whiplash injury that effects my neck and upper back. I've had tons of massage over the years to relieve the pain when it gives me problems especially during stressful times. Because of the relief I have obtained from massage, I would like to help others through bodywork treatments. Is there anyway this old injury could effect my ability to learn and give massage? Through the classes I take will they be able to show me ways that will make giving massage less traumatic on my own body? This is all new to me, so any information you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Linda (Read Answer) |

| Carole: You seem like the right person to ask this question. I know a number of women who are quite anxious to begin enjoying treatments at a Day Spa or even a Resort Spa, but continue to refrain from doing so for a simple reason -- they are at varying stages of being overweight, from slightly, to obese. I recently met this group of women in connection with an article regarding self-esteem during and after weight-loss programs. One woman went so far as to say she is too shy and embarrassed to seek day spa treatments because "I'm mortified I'll be charged extra for a body scrub because I have double the body." She was half-joking and half serious. She wonders, and the group agreed, how can we be assured we are welcome, that we will fit on the table (literally), what the recommended treatments are. I mean, it would help to know whether hydrotherapy tubs can accommodate a 250 lb woman, or would be directed to seek out something else. One woman, the only moderately overweight member, said "I've gotten nothing but pedicures for 5 years because it means I can sit in a chair and not worry about the other stuff, and just get my feet worked on. But what I'd REALLY like is a vichy shower, or, a hydro soak. I'm just too embarrassed to ask if I'll fit in the tub, or, whether it's okay to get a body scrub if you have 'extra body.'" I can appreciate the frustration of these women, applaud their efforts to pamper themselves if it improves self-esteem, or reward themselves with non-food items when they make weekly goals. A Day Spa is a perfect solution for these women, provided the facilities are sensitive to their issues, and share the type of information they are so reluctant to ask. What advice do you have, and what IS appropriate, or recommended for the "non-svelte" spa visitor? (Read Answer) |

In the October 2002 issue of DaySpa Magazine you wrote an article in the wellness section on Spa services for Mothers to be. I am a Pregnancy Massage Therapist and will soon be opening a day spa in which I hope to focus services on pregnant women as well as women dealing with other hormonal issues such as menopause. You discussed offering skin care services and leg relief treatments. But you didn't offer any ideas as to where to find the products that could be used.
I have been trying to get this information by contacting other spas that offer Mother-to-be services with out any luck.
Can you recommend some companies that offer product lines that are safe for these services?

I really enjoy helping people and have been doing a self study of aromatherapy. I have 2 questions. First, can you recommend a good online correspondence course I could do from here (or do you think I should wait until I get back and take a course at a school)? Also, I have a BS in Business Administration and can speak Japanese and Spanish. I want to work in aromatherapy sales on an international level. I was thinking of maybe selling to destination spas? I want to work for a company that focuses on the health benefit of aromatherapy and not just the nice smell. I looked at Aveda, but was wondering if you could recommend some other companies that would be good to work for?
I really appreciate you taking the time to read and answer my questions. Im sure you are really busy and I think its wonderful that you take the time to help other people!

Dear Ms. Schor: October 15, 2003
The following e-mail note is what I currently use to begin an initial position search within a spa resort company. My question follows:
I am currently on a path to a career transition in the area of spa resort development. Specifically, I am pursuing a position with a world-class spa resort company as an Executive Advisor of Spa Resort Property Acquisition, Development and Restoration. The primary responsibility, as the title suggests, is to assist in the further acquisition of spa resort properties, development of new and existing properties and restoration of properties to develop or re-position such properties to a high level of distinction and profitability around the world.
My education and experience includes 20+ years in commercial landscape architecture and land planning:
1Property Site Analysis, Inventory and Mapping
1Native Plant Inventory and Assessment
1Physical Site Planning and Design
1Office, Commercial Planning and Design
1Master Planned Communities: multiple density residential, commercial, office, school, parks, open space, recreation facilities, roads, trails
1City and County Park Planning and Design
1Project Coordination with Surveyors, Engineers and Architects;
1City and County Agencies;
1Cities and Towns Mayors and Councils, Counties Boards of Supervisors;
1Public Meetings with Neighborhoods
1Construction Documents: planting, irrigation, layout, grading, details, specifications.
My education and experience, my desire to develop the best properties and travel the world for such properties, creativity and hard work ethic, I firmly believe will enhance the value of a strong company such as _________. I would very much appreciate the opportunity to discuss such opportunities with you and your team.
Sincerely,

A) Do spa resort companies hire individuals to travel world-wide and provide such responsibilities, whether they be a Fortune 500 company or private company. I suspect I would need to find a company with several hundred or a couple thousand properties or the desire to expand for the next 20-30 years.
If you don’t mind I would appreciate the chance to ask other questions during my research in this industry.
Sincerely,
Scott Field

Hello! I'm beginning my career in Esthiology and am interested in a finding out if there are such positions in the field of Esthetics that allow/require estheticians to travel to different spas (or etc) working for short periods of time? I love to travel and love esthetics. I want to combine the two in some way. I've never heard of this being done (although I'm sure it has) but would like to know how I can go about creating a niche for myself as the "Traveling Esthetician". Would I be considered an independent worker? Are there agencies or companies that hire estheticians for clients and then send them out for "on assignments" jobs or guest spots at spas around the country? (or out of the country) If not, how can I go about markenting myself to be that sort of esthetician? How difficult do you think it would be to be successful at that? I'm considering personal appts, guest spots, resort spas, etc. Your advice and guidance is greatly appreciated. I'm very serious about this and can't wait to begin working in the field.
One more question: In your professional opinion, which is the better place to gain experience and build a excellent reputation - NY or LA? I currently live in NY but will consider relocating to advance my career and chances at doing what I want to do in the long run. (Sorry this is so long)

After all it's only 600 hours! Thank you so much for your advice!
Sincerely,

Dear Carole
My name is Svetlana and I'm 27 years old.
I had a massage last friday and yesterday, from an experienced lady. The problem is that she was pressing certain points of my head very hard.(behind my ears , on the bone) and it was painful during and after the massage. I'm worried about the side effects of this massage. Is it normal for the maassage to be painful. Should I be worried?

I am very interested in becoming a sales representive for a company. I enjoy interacting with clients, I love to travel, and I love to work on my own, that is be my own boss! I realize that I would be working for a company in a position like this - but I like the flexibility this would offer.
I have NO idea where to begin though. I have tried to do online searches but to no avail. Could you stear me in the right direction or give me any pointers on where to apply?
I have 14 years experience as a administrative assistant/sales assitant and I am a licensed esthetician currently working for the past year and half as an esthtician. I also have had my own decortive painting business for the past 4 years.
But I have very little experience in selling products directly to customers - just the past 3 months with the current esthetician position I hold.
Any info would be great! Thanks. (Read Answer) |
I am looking to incorporate massage and facial services to our Medical Spa. I would like to know what percentage of revenue an average day spa generates from both massage services and facial services. Also, what type of profit percentage can be expected on such services. I appreciate any info you may provide.

Dear Carole,
I have a question regarding the school that I plan on going to, to get my 600 hours. I realize that I can go to a beauty school, community college ect, but my question is, do future employers look at what school you went to and use that to decide that one is better than the other, or that you pass your state exam and continue on to get more education, say at the Derma institue. I am finding of course that the community college is much less expensive than the beauty schools. Thanks so much for your help. I want to make the right choice.

I am a recent Aesthetician and graduated last April but have not been able to land a job where I would like to live, this past January I got a job here in Charlotte, NC one day a week with a new spa that has now been open one year. I am lucky if I have one client on that day, but it is some experience to put on my resume and better than not doing it at all. I have been trying to get a job in a high end spa in Charleston, SC but I think that because I don't have experience in the field that no one will give me a chance. I have lots of Management experience in retail sales and customer service. I have my license for both NC and SC. Is there any advice you can give me? I think I need a network of people to help introduce me to the right people. I have interviewed with many spa's there and they decide to choose others. If you can help me that would be grateful.
Thank you

| We are a cosmeceutical skin care company founded by two nurses who treated burn patients for 15 years. The name of the line is L’Athene. We have distribution in select Nordstrom stores (the stores with advanced technology cosmeceuticals), doctor’s offices and spas. We are looking for good representatives and have not been successful searching on the internet. We are looking for a group of reps to follow up on existing accounts and to open new ones. Can you give us the names of some Representative firms who could cover one or both markets? We realize that groups that go into spas may not go into doctor’s offices, so we are willing to work with two different groups. You can call 1-800-272-5502 or email me at Lsnyder@lathene.com. Our President and CEO (Nancy Brown, RN and Lil Bogdan, RN) are willing to speak to you also. Thank you very much. Linda Snyder – Marketing and Sales Administration. (Read Answer) |
Hello, this question is in reference to cosmotology and I hoped you could answer this for me. To get a license in cosmotology in Pennsylvania 1260 hours are needed and I wanted to know if New York's hours are about the same, more or less. I appreciate your time and if it is possible to find this out elsewhere I would be grateful.
