I am in the process of opening a small day spa-salon (800 sq feet). The services that I want to provide are the following: Nails,Hair, massage, facials,Reflexology, body treatments, ear candling. My question is this: Do I keep my start up cost fairly low and call it a "Salon" and do body treatments (seaweed , mud wraps ect) on a massage table. Or to I spend the extra $14,000 to get the thermal M from Thalasso systems and call it a "spa"??My location is a summer resort town and I would be located in an extremely busy hotel-no other servives offered anywhere else, but 7mths of winter - tourist pop. down. Hi Richard,
I am looking to open a Day Spa in central NJ. It hasn't yet been designed or built, so I have the opportunity to set it up in the most marketable / profitable way possible (as long as I know what that is!). My question is about a Hydrotherapy tub and whether it's worth it to purchase/install/sell? I read from another "expert" that they weren't very profitable compared to massages, facials, and other body treatments. 2nd question would be: what ARE the most cost effective & profitable services / equipment for a day spa in an upscale, high traffic shopping center ? Thanks.

Hello,

I am a student at the University of Iowa. I am currently writing a business plan for my Commercial Recreational Management class. We are proposing a spa in the Iowa City area. I a having quite a bit of difficulty in finding research on spa start-ups, usage rates, etc. I have found plenty of resources but, of course, they are all selling their information. We are just poor students trying to do an assignment and have no intention of starting this spas. Therefore, we do not wish to pay for information. Can you recommend any resources for free research. Thanks you so much for your help!

I recently found the Spa Trade website. It's great to have a resouce to answer questions since it's so difficult to get answers when you are running a small day spa business. Regarding gift certificates: Like most spas, we put a one year expiration date on our gift certificates for massage and skin care. It is my understanding that there are some states that do lot allow a business to put an expiration date on a gift certificate. Does Florida have such a regulation? Even if it doesn't, I am concerned that it may create ill will by the customer if you do not honor it....especially if it expired just a week or two previously. What is your recommednation as to how they should be handled? Thank you (Read Answer)
I am considering starting a holistic spa (co-ed, European style) in So. California. The area historically has been more conservative, but it has no such facilities--we all have to go to the S.F. Bay area. I'd like to offer massage, tea, hot tubs and sauna--as a day retreat only for open minded, mature individuals. Do you think this is a good/profitable concept? (Read Answer)

I am working with a group of business students to forumlate a day spa business plan for our business course at James Madison University. We are currently trying to put together some financial statements but are having trouble estimating costs, salaries, rent etc. Our plan is to open a Day Spa in Los Angeles International Airport. Do you have any advice on how to get information on developing financials, sales forecasts etc? Furthermore, do you have any information on the airport spa market? We have found there are only 15 in all of North America, but the ones that do exist are extremely profitable. If you have any information please let us know!

Hi Richard,
I\'m planning to open a 4k sq. ft day spa/salon in a residential suburb area. I\'ve read reports on the demographics of spa goers. I\'ve obtained 1, 3, and 5 mile radius demographic reports surrounding our future location. My question is:
what % of the population in my area need to meet the typical spa goer demographic (white female 30 - 55 house hold income above $50k?). And in what proximity (within 20 minute drive?) to my location do they need to live.
Thank you very much,

Hi Richard
I am trying to put together a current Day spa (Medi Spa) Analysis, Trends, and Outlook together for my investors but all this info seems to be held by companies who want $195 & up for this info. Is there a place I can source all this info, or do I have to pay a company to give me this? Thank you VERY much for your time. Have an Outstanding day!

Richard Eidson I am in the process of writing my business plan for an up scale day spa and I am looking for some advice on skin care. As their are so many skin care lines available it is so difficult to make a decision which one is the best. Recently I have been conducting some research on private label skin care and I have come across 2 lines that have great margins, but I have yet to try the products and determine if they are quality. My question to you is am I better of starting a new day spa with a name that is recognized by the public and then changing it in a few years to a higher margin line like private label once I have a larger client basis. And if I do will this piss off my clients and send them to my competitors?

Thank you
