Hello,
I am a student at the University of Iowa. I am currently writing a business plan for my Commercial Recreational Management class. We are proposing a spa in the Iowa City area. I a having quite a bit of difficulty in finding research on spa start-ups, usage rates, etc. I have found plenty of resources but, of course, they are all selling their information. We are just poor students trying to do an assignment and have no intention of starting this spas. Therefore, we do not wish to pay for information. Can you recommend any resources for free research. Thanks you so much for your help!

Hello Mrs Abbajay, you are quite accomplished! My mom is in the hospital and I brought some things so that I could do her nails (I am a licensed nail tech). The nurse was in there and was like "I would like to get my nails done", and she was saying that I would be great if we had someone to offer patients, nurses etc...nails services. I believe that all hospitals now in Greenville, SC can not have artificial nail enhancements.I focus on the natural nail anyways. I would be offering services like a pedicure, spa pedicure, manicures and spa manicures, and I am in the process of making my own signature treatments. How would I get this started in a Hospital??? And once I am in am I allowed to travel to each room if patients can't come to me say like a manicure. I do want open a spa one day but this sound pretty neat. Something to get me started with my nail business and later spa business. HELP!!!
Thanks,

Hi Sharilyn. What a wonderful career you've had! I am currently a director of sales/marketing for a boutique hotel in nyc. I have often imagined a switch from the stress and grind of corporate hotel sales to a career in some aspect of spa services/healing arts. 2 years ago my mom was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and much to my dismay I was hard pressed to find a resource for message therapy for her, a cancer patient. This experience fueled a desire that had taken a back seat to other career pursuits. i am a believer in the healing power of touch whether it be a swedish massage or an aromatherapy facial and my hope is to some day provide these services to people with cronic or debilitating illnesses and to the elderly -- populations which often lack access to the warmth of a human hand. Now, how to begin?
Can you recommend training programs in NYC which focus on msssage/esthetician practices? And what would be a good resource to determine entry level salary range?
Thanks for your assistance!

Hi,
I have just passed my cosmetology exam from New Jersey. I have also done my SPA therapy & Make Up Certification along with some skin care classes from Repachage and Root Factor for Gycolic/Non Surgical Face Lift etc.
I would be interested in persuing more advanced skin care and work in some reputed salon/spa. I was wondering if Victoria Rayner School in Washington or CIDESCO School be suitable for me. If you have any other schools in mind which would be more suitable please let me know.
Also if I want to gain employment in a spa/salon do i really need to go through a complete esthetician program. I had a look at the Christine Valmy Esthetician course (600 HRS) and it was not very deep. It was very basic and a lot of the stuff we had already covered in the cosmetology class. I could not see any value in the curriculum.
Thanks in advance for your time.

I have read many of the other Q&A here and have come up with a few Q's of my own. I hope you can help. I am in the southern Maryland area and contemplating a career in esthetics. But let me get this straight, once I go through the 600 hr training program and obtain the license, I am limited to practicing in Md. only. So what would happen if I did move out of state? Must you get retrained under the hour requirements in that state and retake their exam? This is something I have to consider, as I may be relocating every few years. (husband is a contract engineer). Is it possible that this may not even be a viable career option for me?
Also, I read your recommendations for the Vonn Lee school in Baltimore. It appears that this would be the best match for me, if I was to pursue this career field. However, it would be a long commute of about 2 hours. What do you think? Have esthetic students attended schools that far away while commuting, and been successfull that you know of. One school that may be closer is Victoria Raynor's in DC. Although, I have heard that she charges a lot, pushing her products, and well, just that overall graduates felt they did not get their money's worth as far as training & knowledge.
Well, please let me know what you think. I will be anxious to hear any replies. I cannot thank you enough.

Dear Ms. Abbajay,
I have recently started esthetician school at the Advanced Skincare Center located in Virginia and in Washington, D.C. The woman who is teaching the class is certified and was viewed by people in the industry with good qualifications.
My issue is since I have been attending class I have not been happy with her teaching methods. We are learning from the Milady's textbook and she goes over chapters with us when we read it outloud in class. Also, she does not test us. We were told to use the Milady's workbook as a the test for each chapter and to grade ourselves.
We have stated having model students attend our classes so we can practice on their face, but the sanitation is not acceptable. I my teacher several times why she does not change the beddings for each new model, but she escaped the questions and told me if I run my spa that way I will be out of business.
When we have a student doing a facial she is assisting one of her family members with microdermabrasion, waxing, etc. in the same room and tells us to focus on the student. How can she be sure that student is practicing the correct techniques? I did ask why her facial was different than the Milady's textbook illustrations and she told me that they are not showing a European facial and to follow her techniques and not the textbook.
I am worried and frustatred because I am already $2000.00 out-of-pocket and signed a contract to pay the full balance of $6500.00.
My thought was to stay with her and get my board certification, then attend advanced class at the Dermalogical Institute.
Please do not post this e-mail. It would be most appreciative for you expert opinion as soon as possible.
Best regards,

I am very interested in becoming a sales representive for a company. I enjoy interacting with clients, I love to travel, and I love to work on my own, that is be my own boss! I realize that I would be working for a company in a position like this - but I like the flexibility this would offer.
I have NO idea where to begin though. I have tried to do online searches but to no avail. Could you stear me in the right direction or give me any pointers on where to apply?
I have 14 years experience as a administrative assistant/sales assitant and I am a licensed esthetician currently working for the past year and half as an esthtician. I also have had my own decortive painting business for the past 4 years.
But I have very little experience in selling products directly to customers - just the past 3 months with the current esthetician position I hold.
Any info would be great! Thanks. (Read Answer) |

I am a recent Aesthetician and graduated last April but have not been able to land a job where I would like to live, this past January I got a job here in Charlotte, NC one day a week with a new spa that has now been open one year. I am lucky if I have one client on that day, but it is some experience to put on my resume and better than not doing it at all. I have been trying to get a job in a high end spa in Charleston, SC but I think that because I don't have experience in the field that no one will give me a chance. I have lots of Management experience in retail sales and customer service. I have my license for both NC and SC. Is there any advice you can give me? I think I need a network of people to help introduce me to the right people. I have interviewed with many spa's there and they decide to choose others. If you can help me that would be grateful.
Thank you

| We are a cosmeceutical skin care company founded by two nurses who treated burn patients for 15 years. The name of the line is L’Athene. We have distribution in select Nordstrom stores (the stores with advanced technology cosmeceuticals), doctor’s offices and spas. We are looking for good representatives and have not been successful searching on the internet. We are looking for a group of reps to follow up on existing accounts and to open new ones. Can you give us the names of some Representative firms who could cover one or both markets? We realize that groups that go into spas may not go into doctor’s offices, so we are willing to work with two different groups. You can call 1-800-272-5502 or email me at Lsnyder@lathene.com. Our President and CEO (Nancy Brown, RN and Lil Bogdan, RN) are willing to speak to you also. Thank you very much. Linda Snyder – Marketing and Sales Administration. (Read Answer) |
I desire to work in the spa industry as a spa manager/owner. I don't have any spa managerial experience, I have only worked in a spa as a part-time nail tech. I have been searching for any Spa Management training in or near the Chicago area but have been unsuccessful. There are upcoming events that have 1 day seminars for spa owners/managers but I haven't found any extensive courses in this area. I would love to go to a 4/5 day Spa Management Intensive Training but most of the training I've found is in California or Las Vegas and unfortunately, that would be difficult for me to attend due to the expenses. Do you have any recommendations where I can get the training I desire near the Chicago area.
Also, I would like to move into my area of interest as soon as possible but I know no one is going to hire me as a spa manager with no experience. I called a spa and someone told me that some spas do internships for people desiring to go into the spa business. I want to gain as much knowledge as I can about the spa business, I want to know the ins and outs and I believe working in a spa would be the best way for me to get hands-on experience. Do you think this would be feasible with you being a person who started out with the right opportunity of entering the spa industry? I am looking for a mentor that would give me all the information and the right opportunity I need to operate a spa successfully. What would be the best way for me to go about finding this opportunity? I have been working in the shopping center industry for the past 6 years and I have no passion for what I do. I know I have the passion for the spa industry but I also know it is not going to be easy. I have a lot to offer a spa by my drive, personality and confidence that I can meet the needs of the clients and staff by building positive and growing relationships. I want to get connected with the right people that can help me along the way. I am ready to make that transition so I can work toward my goal of owning/managing one of the best spas in Chicago and its surrounding areas. Any help and advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. Timeko M. Murry (Read Answer) |
Dear Ms. Abbajay,
Our company is getting ready to go to market exclusively within the salon/spa industry with a natural skin serum that works proactively with any brand currently sold by the business. We are a very well known and trusted company within the nutritional market, but this is our first step into this industry.
What advice could you give to us to most effectively market to the salons and day spas? What would our most effective approach be, and also, what would be an approach we would want to avoid?
Thank you for your input on this matter.

I am a new esthetician in North Carolina, and my goal is to work on a cruise ship. I am young, single, am dying to travel, and I love what I do. I am convinced it would be perfect for me. I am working at a day spa and plan to do so for a year or so to build up experience. What I was wondering was if anyone can tell me about etheticians working on cruise ships. The pay, the accomodations, the food, the people, the places, the tips, the contracts, or anything else anyone knows. Thanks in advance!
