HELP...who is the best person to help me figure out the best moisturizer for my skin? I always thought I was just a combination skin and until this past year, never did much for my skin, washed it with whatever was in the shower and moisturized it once in a while..that was it. Last year (at 48) I noticed dry areas and realized that my great complexion was no more. So I started takign better care of my skin, washing it in the morning and then moisturizing with BioTherm Source Therape. I thought it was great since it was mostly water based and I literally can NOT stand anything greasy feeling on my hands (I am a riot finding a good hand lotion)let alone my face. I get warm easy and feel like heavy stuff makes my skin feel like it is melting off my face. Biotherm was light, nongreasy AND felt great.

BUTTTT, the problem started last week. I had gotten lazy again, not moisturizing regularly and when I took my shower last Saturday, got out and put my moisturizer on. Ten minutes later, I sat down to put on my eye makeup and noticed patches of dry, flaky skin on my cheeks and by my mouth. I put MORE moisturizer on and within a few minutes, it was a little better, but still flaky.

I tried it several times and always the same...

I was thinking of going to a dermatologist, but my sister said going for a facial would do the same thing...they can tell you your skin type etc.

PLEASE HELP. I am not rich, can not afford to go to tons of different places, but I cant stand seeing these dry patches now.

I tried Neutroena for combo skin, but just tried that this morning, so dont have enough to iknow if this helps.

PLEASE...any advice where I should go to help..

thank you..

Cheryl, I'm looking into taking advanced esthetics education with Victoria Rayner so that ultimatly i could work in plastics. From what I understand this is a relatively new field, and there aren't any real standards as far as compensation and education (cosmetology school vs. higher education and advanced training) For someone like myself who has a 4 year degree in Nutrition and is will to take advanced training and aspiring to work as a skin therapist in a medical setting, would you say there are avalable job opportunities as well as salary growth? Is it worth investing time and money into this career? (Read Answer)

Dear Ms. Whitman,

I am an Esthetician working within a Day Spa. I have a question for you regarding the usage of salicylic acid.

I would like to know what concerns I should have with skin contact of SA on a daily basis. I work with many products that contain SA. I am planning on having a baby within the next year.

I have read many articles that state SA should not be used by pregnant women. I am using it several times a day - and am obviously exposed to it - thru skin contact -(fingers, hands).
Should I be concerned? What do you suggest?

Thank you,

Regards,

Hi Cheryl, I received my esthetician license four years ago, I worked in a spa while I was going to school to get my license. Soon after I graduated from school and received my license I was given an opportunity as a private flight attendant that I just could not pass up. I have now been around the world and am ready to settle down and get back into the world of esthetics. I have always been interested in the medical side of skin care and like the clinical aspect. What do you reccomend that I do? Should I get my paramedical license? I am very ready to get back into skin care, but I feel a bit rusty and I am not sure where to begin.

I am going to school to become a licensed aesthetician. I would like to focus on the medical side of aesthetics. Do you have to attend a school to become a 'medical aesthetician'? I would like to know if I would be able to perform actual laser hair removal and microdermabrasion? I would also like to know if I would be able to give injections such as Botox, or would I need a special license or course in the medical field to give injections? I live in the state of Texas. Who would I need to contact to find out about state requirements, other than the Texas Cosmetology Commission. I have searched their site and they do not have the answers I am looking for.

Cheryl,
I don't think my first question went through. My question is when opening a spa that provides laser treatments,(IPL) hair and tatoo removal, microdermabrasion, etc. what involvement does the Physician or Practicioner have to have. We are getting training in the use of the laser, botox and collagen injections also. The consultant says the Dr. only has to be present on the initial injections and does not have to be present in the operation of the laser. I am curious about fees to pay the doctor for his/her services, insurance and malpractice issues, and if the doctor has to be licensed in that particular state. We are looking in North Carolina and there are no specific regulations. Can you give me any advise?

Hi Cheryl, Hopefully you will be able to help or at least point me in the right direction. I am a lisenced Nail Specialist for 5 years and Esthetician for 6 months. I have recently gotten a job in a Resort Day Spa doing both nails and skin care. A problem I am coming across with where I am working now is that I am being scheduled for more nail appointments verses facials or body treatments which is not giving me as much hand on experiance as I would like. That is not what really concerns me though. I have noticed most of our clients for skin care come to relax and don't take skin care very seriously. I am discovering that I would like to work more to help people with skin conditions and who are serious about preventing the signs of aging verses helping someone sleep for an hour. Which makes me think I would like to work in a Medical Spa or with a Dermatologist/Plastic Surgeon. My question is how do I go about looking for one who needs an Esthetician??? And that would hire one who has only 6 months of experiance??? I have looked on the internet hopeing to find something to point me in a direction and have had no luck. Any advice you can give would help.

Thanks,

Hi Cheryl.
First I want to say what a beautiful smile you have :) In December 2003 I received my license as an Estetician. I just landed a job in salon/day spa that is a chain. The pay is average but has great medical benefits. I started a career in Skin Care late in life. I'm fifty now and was working in an office for over 25 years. I have always believed in good skin care and taking care of yourself. Starting out in a new career is scary especially when your approaching individual much younger than you are telling them about how important it is to take care of your skin. I feel we should be a walking advertisement on the benefits of taking care of your skin. It's easy to say when your young like most of the other estheticians or women who my age has had extensive plastic surgery but what happens when your the average women of 50 who hasn't had anything done. I am not finacially able at this time to do anything except for the basic microderms and peel. My skin is nice but I can't say I'm a walking advertisement. Can you give me any advise on what to do. I am a recent Aesthetician and graduated last April but have not been able to land a job where I would like to live, this past January I got a job here in Charlotte, NC one day a week with a new spa that has now been open one year. I am lucky if I have one client on that day, but it is some experience to put on my resume and better than not doing it at all. I have been trying to get a job in a high end spa in Charleston, SC but I think that because I don't have experience in the field that no one will give me a chance. I have lots of Management experience in retail sales and customer service. I have my license for both NC and SC. Is there any advice you can give me? I think I need a network of people to help introduce me to the right people. I have interviewed with many spa's there and they decide to choose others. If you can help me that would be grateful.

Hi Cheryl
I'm trying to figure out how estheticians are working in medical spas as estheticians. As far as I can tell, only NY and PA allow estheticians to work medical devices such as laser hair removal or microdermabrasion machines. In this day of lawsuits and malpractice, I don't understand how so many estheticians can be working basically illegally in most states. I understand they can be "physician's assistants" but does that not require so form of license as well? In particular, I'd like to know if Florida or North Carolina has recently addressed this issue and where most states stand on this issue? Thanks so much! KaT (Read Answer)

My brother is a dermatologist and is willing to invest some time and capital into the business, but he has his own full time practice and would not be able to be present every day. How would I find the legal boundaries of offering medical treatments (botox, laser, chemical peels, etc) via estheticians and nurses in the spa? And am I required to have a physician physically on the premises every day? Are there different regulatory issues for each state? I live in Missouri.

Thanks,

One more question regarding the medical spa with regard to having a physician involved in the business. I understand that most medical spas are owned by the physicians themselves. In my case, I would be employing the physician/nurses/estheticians to administer the treatments in my non-physician business. What type of payment method is generally used in this type of scenario? Is it flat fee? Or commission based? Or percentage of profits on the treatments? And what kind of costs should I prepare myself for with this?

Thanks again,

Hello cheryl,
What is the best way to approach a doctor for medical treatments in a spa? Do I call around in the area? Place an ad in the paper? and after I have contaced them what advantage is it to them to perform these services in my spa verses their practice? Any advice greatly appreciated as this is the last reasearch I need for my business plan.
Thank -you

Hello. I am very interested in pursuing a career in the skin care industry. The problem is I'm really not sure where to begin. I've been researching cosmetology schools on the internet, but there's just so many it's overwhealming. I'd like to go into the esthetics field (maybe medical esthetics)and someday own my own spa. But where should I start? I want to attend the best school and get complete training in all different areas of skincare so i can be prepared for the industry. I live in California. Do you have any advice for me and can you please recommend some reputable schools? Thank you so much for your help! =) (Read Answer)
Hi there Cheryl. I've been offered a position with a medical spa that offers laser hair removal, foto facials, microdermabrasion, botox, collagen, stretch mark removal, etc. I am new to this industry, I was previously a booking agent for makeup artists, hair stylists & wardrobe stylists. Anyway, I was curious as to what a typical salary is for this position. They offer a base salary, plus commission, and I've been told that this position does very well financially. One thing that concerns me is that the spa is located in a mall in Beverly Hills. There are a million spas like this in Beverly Hills, that are NOT located in a mall. It's grand opening is when I begin working, so there is no previous history in this area to compare to. They do have several spas in Washington, Oregon, Nevada & Northern California - all are very successful.

I just wanted to get your opinion. I know this industry makes billions of dollars each year, I was just curious what you thought of these circumstances.
Thanks so much!! Have a great day!
Tami
