Dear Caren,
I am very interested in training to become a spa esthetician. Does the school you go to have an impact on your market viability as a graduate? If so can you recommend the best training facilities, both Nationally and in California, I currently reside in LA but I am willing to go where I will receive the best training available.
I thank you in advance for your kind recommendations, it is much appreciated.

Hello Everyone,
I currently operate my own On-Line Recruitment Company and beleive that this is a great opportunity for the Spa Industry to get ahead. I have come across some barriers however and begin to think that maybe our industry is not ready for this strategy yet. I have used this method in the past and have seen tremendous results in cost savings, turn around and global reach. If you have any insight as to why this is not popular in the Spa Industry please let me know.

hi caren,
i am working on financial projections for my business plan and want to know if there is a day spa industry average for total revenue growth from year to year. also, when calculating my first year best case, worst case and most likely projections for treatment revenue, what percentage of room ocuupancy do i use for each? for example, if i have 10 treatment rooms and average treatment cost is $75 and i will be open eight hours a day, is best case for one day figured at 100% occupancy? if so, what accounts for the growth in the following year\'s projections -- would it be increase in service price? thank you very much for your help.

Hi Caren,
Thanks for all the consultation advise. Wondered if you might be able to help....
Situation: I\'ve got some free time on my hands (business- re-focus/turning 30 mid-life crisis) and I\'m writing a business plan to open a wet-spa in Dallas, TX. Actually, I\'m trying to locate a spa in a large historical landmark (real-estate), close to a new luxury condo for a unique setting. In my previous life I was a Business Dev./Marketing. person for a large fortune 500 firm (very different from a start-up). My current focus is to become an entrepreneur (and innovator) and to do something different (and learn a new trade from others).
Question: Since time is not on my hands to get a license for myself (and from my understanding need one to open up a business), I\'m wondering if you can think of a situation where a spa has opened (2 partners) where one partner has done all the macro business work (i.e. starting business, keeping up w/trends, marketing, finance, adv. etc.) and the other partner has his/her license and has concentrated on the technical therapy needs of clients and training of employees? If this is a successful model/mix, can you think of anywhere to look for qualified people w/partnership goals and an interest in opening a new business? I figure the VCs and investors are going to shoot holes in my bus. plan if I don\'t have a tech-expertise person to work with..

Hello Caren,
I was recently laid off and am looking into going to school to become an esthetician. I have always loved the beauty industry(makeup, beauty products, facials, pedi and manicures, etc). However, I am finding that the private schools in the area are quite costly as compared to the course offered by the community college here. The length of training is considerably shorter at the private schools (4 months-vs 2 semesters-approximated 9 months) at the community college. Although I am anxious to start working in this field immediately after I obtain my license, I want to receive the best training. Also, when a school is accredited, what exactly does this mean? Can this affect my future employment if the school I go to is not accredited? Any advice you give will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! (Read Answer) |

Hi,
We are currently in the process of developing a day spa and salon in Florida. We have been meeting with the architects on the floor plan and there seems to be two schools of though arising.
This is going to be a 5,400 sqft very high-end facility. It will feature a dramatic front entry/ lobby (approx. 30’x30’) with a marble fountain in the center and granite floors.
We are planning on featuring some wonderful and comfortable seating areas and a dramatic reception area.
Question 1
Will this waiting area be sufficient for overall use or do we need to have additional men’s and women’s lounges on the interior. Also should we have internal locker rooms or should we put lockers in the hall in view of the front desk personnel
Question 2
We are going to have a marvelous line of private label skin care products and cosmetics. Should this be situated behind the counter in a large display area or should we seek to establish a retail “store” display area which people can browse.
Question 3
We are trying to decide between 2 dedicated wet rooms or 2 combo rooms (the plan calls for 6 total treatment rooms)
Any help or advice would be appreciated
Thanks

Hi Caren -
I live in NJ, and have been thinking about obtaining an education in esthetics. I have narrowed the schools down to (3), and I'm having a hard time choosing which one to go to. I made appts. with all of them, and received minor tours. The school that seemed most impressive to me is about 70 min from my house, costs $1975.00 more in tuition, and is not as flexible on start dates (plus the other schools are either 15 min from my house, or 40 minutes). I'm trying to do a comparison against the curriculums, but it doesn't seem to help much because some areas are worded differently with little descriptions. Also, two schools call their program "Skin Care Program"; the more expensive school calls their program "Esthiology" (it is also an Aveda salon/spa). So, my question is two fold - 1) What should I be looking for in a school for esthetics?, and 2) Doesn't it really matter? I ask the question "Does it really matter?" because I was once told that it doesn't matter where you get your education. Just pass your certification and get licensed. What matters most is to receive the best on-the-job training you can because you receive valuable education/training through actually performing the work. The $2000 dollar difference keeps ringing in my head because that's 4 car payments. Plus, I keep thinking that I could use that money for "post graduate training" - as I'm interested in taking classes at the Dermal Institute in NYC.
Anyway, thank you for your help. I'll be making a decision soon, so I look forward to your advice. :-)

Hi Caren,
In esthetics training, how important is it to attend a school with a C.I.D.E.S.C.O. affiliation? There are two reputable schools in my area (Vancouver, BC) and one has the affiliation and the other one doesn\'t. I\'ve heard good things about both schools and am more partial to the non-CIDESCO school because of their location and schedule. Is there a good reason as to why I should be considering the other one? I would like to practice esthetics locally and open up my own day spa one day.
Thanks,

Hi Caren,
What is the true value of C.I.D.E.S.C.O. training? I want to pursue a career in esthetics and eventually open up a day spa (in Vancouver, Canada). There are two schools which offer solid training programs in esthetics, but one of them also offers the CIDESCO training which is approximately 700 hours longer than the regular program. Is it worth it to pursue the CIDESCO diploma even if I just plan to work locally? What are some other things I should look for in a school?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

I have a follow-up question to Vicki's of Dallas, Texas. I too live in Dallas and 3 teenage sons! I am 51 years old and left a high-level position in corporate America to find a job that offers lower stress and helps others. I am currently being trained by a medical doctor to do microdermabrasion. As a former marketing director, I am building the skincare side of his practice. I also have a cosmetics business and I work 6 hours per day to give me a stable income.
My question is two-fold? Will the state eventually require that I have some type of liscensing to perform microderabrasion? And, secondly, are scholarships available to women such as Vicki and myself who want to change careers?

Hi Caren,
First off, I want to compliment you on this site it has given me a great deal of information and insight in to the field of esthetics. I know this question is proposed quite frequently on your site as well as others. I have also emailed other professionals and called different associations and never seem to get a solid answer. Coming from the corporate area I can name the top business schools off the top of my head and like many others seem to be stuck in this frame of mind as far as finding the top esthetician schools. I realize that state requirements need to play a huge role in the decision but have also noticed that the majority of the states require at least 600 hours (not very many require more) and that reciprocity between states doesn't seem to be a huge hurdle. With all this said here is the question…All things being equal, can you tell me are there any schools that are well respected and are well known throughout the industry? If so, can you tell me who they are or where I might find this information?
Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to your response.

Hi Caren,
We have a well established beauty salon located in an upscale area of Houston. We have about 500 square feet in the back of our salon we're converting for select day spa type services. We're limited by size and by venture capital, so we want to concentrate on only the most popular of services. We currently perform various waxing and dying services, along with typical manicures and pedicures. We're purchasing a spa pedicure chair, facial and massage beds. We have a multi-function facial machine, but it's very old. Sorisa is the brand, I believe. My questions are: Considering the above, what services would suggest we concentrate on providing? Because we'll only have a reduced menu, we want to be creative and unique. Like I mentioned, we don't have a huge budget, so how do you feel aobout hydraulic lift beds, opposed to electric? Can you give me suggestions on lighting? And lastly, since we are adding these new services which our customers may not be familiar or perhaps have never experienced, what would be your choices for a "Sampler" package, hair services included if appropriate? Sampler item's duration, as well. I realize their may be many choices, so suggest your prefs if you can't decide. Thank you very much for your help and time. Joe (Read Answer) |

I will obtain my license from the State of California. However I am considering returning to the UK with my family within the next 2 years. My question is this: Will my California License be enough to seek work as an esthetician in the UK or Europe? My second question is, does the UK require more than 600 hours of training? Perhaps you have the answers or you may be able to direct me to a website that has such information. I thank you so much for any input and/or advice.
Yours Respectfully,

Hello. I noticed that the container for the hot stones is the same roaster they sell in kitchen stores. Question, do you think this would work for a hot towel cabi or would it look too cheap? We are a small resort spa associated with a 6 room property. We hope to convert to a destination spa in the near future.
Thanks

Hi there
I am an ayurvedic Medicine Specialist living in US at present. I have a bachelor in Ayurvedic medicine from India and I plan to start my own small day spa using ayurvedic services and yoga. I am not sure if I can work independently with the degree I have from India. I am registered to work anywhere in India though as an ayurvedic physician. I'd also like to know if I need more certifications to begin my own work? I plan on starting my work in southern california. I am totally new to this business except the Ayurveda knowledge and degree I have. So if you could please guide me where to begin from, I 'd really appreciate that. Thanks so much.

My question is this; I am a male esthetian and I've recently graduated and am without a licence. I was promised by the school that they would find us jobs and help us pass our licencing exam, but we were let down and misled. Is there some kind of compliance for educators and employers alike?
Also I'd really like to work in this industry, but I feel that my dreams have been stolen and I don't know if I will ever be able to work again. I don't have the money to go back to school and I work without a licence so I'm stuck and my former school won't help me. (Read Answer) |

Dear Caren,
I am in the initial budgeting phase for a spa and would need information on typical room utilization rates for modeling purposes.
In a transcript from a "Spa Site Chat" from about.com, you mention 70% as a good utilization target rate for a well functioning mature spa. In the LA market, talking to spa owners, the utilization seems to be more around 50% (70% at peak hours and more 20-30% M-F before 4PM). Is the LA market very competitive compared to other markets? Is the 70% more of a stretch goal? What would be an average number for a normal spa?
Given that I am in the LA market, what utilization number would you advise me to use as a reasonable target and by when should I achieve it?
Thank you for your help.

On top of my current studies i am considering taking some part time courses in esthetics. Are all esthetics classes "medical" esthetic classes? Would i have to have a doctor to oversee my spa? This is an idea that i want to implement at the beggining of next year. Can you please offer me some good advice? Thank you! God bless.

| I am a recent college graduate, holding a Bachelor’s in Advertising and Marketing Communications. During my time in college, I worked for 2 years as a salon coordinator, and fell in love with the industry. I am trying to pursue a career as a spa director. What are the qualifications of such position? What kind of experience is needed? Should I get my cosmetology or esthiology license, and if so which one? I live in central New Jersey, and looking to relocate to NYC, is this area ideal for such position? I heard that moving west is a better option, and destination and resort spas’ salary would be greater. Are there any books you recommend that I read? (PS. I have already tried contacting certain staffing services posted on Spa Trade, and have been unsuccessful in finding a job). Please point me in the right direction. Thank you. (Read Answer) |

It consists of 1200 hours and I am wondering whether I should apply for that certification or just apply for an Esthetic license. My short term goal is to work for a high end spa or a dermatologist. My long term goal is to either work in my husband's office (he is a Plastic Surgeon who is just starting up his own practice) or open my own spa. Can you recommend a specific license for me and any schools in the bay area that may offer it? I am new to the industry and thus have no experience. We have 6 rooms in our inn and 2 treatment rooms (multipurpose) There is another one that I was going to use for nails and possibly a retail area. We can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests. So far the spa has not been our focus but we are in the process of changing that. Massages are the most popular treatments. Do you think that the 2 rooms are enough for 12 people or should that 3rd room be an extra treatment room rather than for nails. What do you think?

Dear Caren,
Recently I visited a school in Florida to check out an Esthetician program I'm looking into and they let me sit in on one of their classes. That day the teacher was explaining about mesaging technique and to stay away from certain glands around the throat, latter she commented that different states have different requirements about mesaging. Anyway when I came back to Washington state (that's where I live) I got a facial from a woman that received training here (in WA) a couple weeks later. The woman doing it did not avoid that gland area around my throat like the teacher did down in Florida. And now my neck still hurts and it's been one week since I had the facial. My question or comment is, if this is the sort of training they give up here in Washington I want to get trained somewhere else. I don't particulairly like Washington anyway and do not wish to work here. I want to work and settle in Los Angeles, CA . I know that hours differ from state to state. But I wish to get trained somewhere where I won't make my clients neck ache at all let alone one week after treatment. The schools I have looked at in L.A. don't seem to offer the courses I'm looking for such practice with microdermabrasion, anti-cellulite wraps and you know the newer state of the art facials. Plus if I find a school in L. A that does (Maybe you know of one?) How do I know if they do the same mesaging as they do in Washington state? I was wondering if this neck aching mesage was a west coast thing and if so , if you could please recommend schools on the east coast. If there isn't good training in the state I want to practice then I will go to a state that at least offers good training and make up the hours and curriculium according to California State requirements. I am looking for a school that offers not only lecture and clinic hours, but practice in the spcialized treatments that I want and hope to do on a daily basis. Such as Plantomer Facial, Hydotherapy Anti-Cellulite Baths, Ultrasonic Facial, Microdermabrasion and Oxygen Therapy etc. If you could please help me I would be so appreciative the last thing I want is to learn my craft the wrong way. I've looked at Lia Schorr in New York City, and International Acadeny in So. Daytona Forida, if you could please direct me or give me advice on how to find out if a good school in L.A ( that offers the treatments I'm looking for and practice in them) that don't do hurtful mesage work to the glands ( I have'nt found one yet maybe you could help me) So I can receive excellence in training and get it done right the first time. What I am looking for is a good fit the right fit.
Please help me I'm dying! and I want to start school in July.
Thank you so much!!!

Hi Caren,
I have done my own research and currently putting together a business plan. I am hoping you can assist me in answering some basic questions below with your expertise.
I am interested in starting up a day spa catered to men in the Washington DC area. The target market would primarily be metrosexuals. My question is what would be a typical start up cost for a spa 1,500 - 2000 sq foot in the Washington DC area? What is your recommendation for the number of staff required to operate a 1,500 - 2,000 sq foot location? Would the employees be mostly independent contractors? What is a realistic time frame from start to finish to complete setting up a new day spa ~ 9 months? Finally, what services/products from day spas typically generate the most to revenues? Typically, how long (yrs) does it take for new day spas to break-even? I appreciate any assistance you can provide.
Thanks
