I AM INTERRESTED IN GOING TO SCHOOL TO GET AN AESTHETICIAN LICENSE. THE ONLY CONCERN I HAVE IS NOT KNOWING HOW MUCH AN AESTHETICIAN MAKES YEARLY. I HAVE SEARCHED EVERYWHERE AND THERE ISN'T MUCH INFORMATION ON THIS SUBJECT. I AM REALLY INTERRESTED IN THE FIELD OF SKINCARE AND WOULD LOVE TO LEARN MORE AND MAKE A WONDERFUL CAREER OUT OF IT. I'M CURRENTLY WORKING FOR A HUGE MAKEUP AND SKINCARE COMPANY NOW. PLEASE, IF SOMEONE COULD HELP ME I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT.

Angela,

It really depends on a few things. One is whether the place you are working at pays on a commision or salary basis. Commision rates could vary from 40/60 on up depending on your experience and the location and type of clientele your employers deals with. On top of that, you may get additional commision for any products you sell (usually 10-15%) and any tips. I know that I didn't give you any solid numbers, but really this is a field where you truly get out what you put in.

The amount of money you make depends on where you practice. They are different all over the country. Californa and NY pay more than the midwest. However, If you go in to a big resort you will most likely be paid better. You will work harder but you will have many bookings and better tips. I would say the average is between $15 and $40 per hour. If you have a commission type job your possibilites are endless as long as you work for it. If you are not sales oriented, this is not the career for you. Most places expect some retail and you will be rewarded for it. Even the most healing positions such as a docter or massage therapist still has to pay the bills.

I find that it really does depend on not where you work but what part of the country you work in. I have lived in Florida for many years and made great money in this field. anywhere between 50,000-80,000 a year. Recently I moved to the midewest and let me tell you ladies, there is no comparison. The beauty world is very behind in the midwest and it is very difficult to make money. People just do not realize how important it is to take care of their skin. They see aesthetics as a luxury rather than a nessessity. If anyone is planning on getting their licence in this field, please make sure you research the area you plan to work in. Find out how many places offer the same skills you do, how much they charge for it, how fast the company is growing and things like that. Trust me, it will benefit you in the long run.

I worked in Colorado at a skin care clinic with a doctor, where I did Laser hair, Microdermabrasion, peels, IPL and medical facials. I made a base of 44,000 and 10% commision on product sales. A great place to search for information arethe magazines Skin Inc, Dermascope and PCI journal. You can make more than that, or less. It all depends on how busy you are and if you do commision or salary.. Hope that helps

I live in the Kansas City, MO area and am enrolling at the local cosmetology school for esthetics. It is a CIDESCO school and seems to be the best choice in my area. My question is how did you learn to do laser hair removal? I know that is not one of the things this school teaches but this is an area I would like to get in to. Thanks

Ashley:

I found your article very interesting. If you don't mind I would like to discuss the topic further with you. I live in the midwest and you are correct in your assessment of "being behind" in the times. I find it amazing that we have several 'spa' locations but cannot seem to keep the estheticans employed for long periods of time. Do you think it is because of competitive salaries or that this industry if finally starting to take off here? In the extreme West and South, spa's do incredibly well and the Medi Spa concept is really becoming popular. I am curious because I am considering entering the field. I would like to get my liscence because I work with people in that capacity and feel that it would be worth my while to get licenced so that I am more knowledgeable about them and what they do when I speak to them. My husband is a dentist. We talk face, structure and 'cosmetic' enhancements all the time. I am already in the beauty industry as with a Teeth Whitening line and we are considering expanding into the Medi Spa arena. I hope that I hear from you.
